Today, during our Social Currency CrunchUp, angel investor Ron Conway had some interesting data to share for the first time. Conway says that his company, SV Angel, has recently done an audit on the over 500 companies they’ve invested in over the past 12 years. And he was surprised with the results.
Conway expected it would show that about one-third of companies fail, one-third get investors their money back, and one-third bring a 2x to Google-x return (Conway invested in Google early on). But that’s not the case. Conway noticed that during the Internet Bubble in 1997 to 2001 — the failure rate (startups that go out of business and the investors get nothing) was a staggering 77 percent. “It was catastrophic,” he said.

PC World – Ballmer promised the world that a Windows 7 tablet is coming. Maybe it is, or maybe it's just a pipedream, but Microsoft doesn't need to focus on developing a Windows 7 tablet. Microsoft does need to focus on having a strategy for taking advantage of the changing mobile computing market–but it doesn't have to include a Windows 7 tablet. More information: click here

According to GroupOn CEO Andrew Mason who is on stage right now at Social Currency CrunchUp, GroupOn was originally a side project Mason started in order to make money, “We tried a zillion things” Mason said.
Including selling slippers with flashlights, which Mason describes as “act of desperation, pretty impressive considering that the company is currently making $365 million in revenues, a million a day according to our sources. Mason gave no thought whatsoever as to whether or not it would work.

Mentoring plays a significant role for us whose professions revolve around the arts and other related sectors. Those who went to college can identify a person or two who acted as their mentor during their college years.
I was under a number of music mentors, there are those who assisted me understand the art of creating music and there are those who provided me the opportunity to polish my craft.
I have several mentors that taught me music 4 of which gave me private piano lessons when I was nine up until I was a sophomore in college. Each mentor helped me become what I am now, but there is 1 mentor that stood out among rest. While 3 of my music mentors focused mainly on method and expression, my instructor through high school acknowledged my gift in songwriting, and being a songwriter herself, tailored my training to include theory and contemporary songwriting, as well as classical training. She did not simply put me in a program instead she helped me grow into an artist.
As a composition major in college, I also had personal instruction with two composition professors – and again, 1 of the two stood out as a mentor in music. He discovered my weak points and strong points as a songwriter and he provided me with a task that will help me grow. He is more of a coach than a teacher and he is willing to deal with every aspect of my humanity not only as a composer but as a person as well.
There were also some mentors along the length of the way who didn’t really teach me music, but acknowledged the gift and made room for it. As a young man of music I spent most of my time in the church and the individuals in the choir allowed me to use the musical and recording instruments which gave me room to hone my skills and learn from my shortcomings. These people were my personal cheerleaders, but even more than that, they had a hand in building a foundation of success under me.
In thinking back again on my music mentors, two realizations stand out. First off, those mentors that really affected me were the ones who took interest in me, as a musician and as a person. Second, I realized that in the course of my development as a musician, I learned more from my mentors than my college education..Despite the fact that a few of my teachers and mentors were in the college setting, it was the personal attention that helped me develop in music, far more than the classes, homework or tests. College played a role but my music mentors made the difference in my development.

Today during our Social Currency CrunchUp, Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman and John Hanke, a Google VP of Product Management, took the stage. Given that the two companies seem to be at odds with one another recently (following a failed acquisition), it was a little tense.
Specifically, Google’s strong moves into local with their new Places push seem to be going right at Yelp’s core. Sure’s it’s potentially about more than just local venue reviews, but that’s a huge part of it. And that’s what Yelp is all about.
Moreover, Google is using Yelp data to bulk up their Places offering. Yelp can’t like that too much. In fact, we’ve heard they’re particularly unhappy because they used to have a deal with Google for this data, but they pulled out of that deal a couple years ago. But Google decided to use Yelp’s data anyway simply by crawling it. Yelp can’t stop them from doing that unless they want to delist themselves from Google — a move which could kill them.
